What is Kizomba?

Kizomba is a beautiful couples social dance from Angola that is gaining popularity all over the world in the last years. It’s an African dance based on walking patterns that creates a beautiful flow and deep connection to yourself, your partner and the music, and that allows for an incredible amount of personal interpretation and musicality. It’s also playful, sensual, and required being in the moment. It’s a dance that is known to be more of an experience than outer manifestation and it can only truly be appreciated fully by dancing it.

Kizomba included both linear and circular walking patterns, and African hip and body movements. It is sometimes called the African Tango, because of the close embrace and the similar walking patterns to Argentine Tango. Kizomba started in the 1980’s when Zouk and Kompa music from the Caribbean influenced Angolan music. Many of the Kizomba moves come from traditional Angolan dances, most well known are Semba (which looks a lot like fast Kizomba)Today there are different styles of kizomba music and dance from the traditional Semba to the modern Urban Kiz, but all the styles are based on the original Passadas (walking patterns).
